Crafting with Swarovski Hotfix Flatback Crystals

Crafting with Swarovski Hotfix Flatback Crystals

Not all of us were born with a gift for crafting – especially when it comes to techniques as complex as crochet, re-upholstery or origami. But the truth is, crafting doesn’t have to be complicated, highly skilled, and reliant on the use of expensive equipment. It just requires some careful planning, a few sensible shortcuts, and easy-to-use materials that give a fantastic finish.

Prepping for a Craft Fair

If you’re dreaming of attending your local craft fair with your own creations, but you aren’t sure where to start, take a look at our Swarovski flatback crystal range. These gorgeous rhinestones range in size from 1.4mm to 7.2mm, and are available in a variety of different colours. They are specially designed with a flat back, to ensure that they can adhere to flat surfaces – the Hotfix crystal is particularly easy to use as it comes with a built-in, heat-activated glue.

Swarovski rhinestones can be used on all kinds of surfaces, provided you have an appropriate adhesive. If you’re working with absorbent fabrics, paper or card, you can use Hotfix flatbacks, applying them with a Hotfix crystal applicator or even your household iron (making sure the steam is turned off).

If you’re working with a non-absorbent material such as glass, plastic or leather, you won’t be able to use Hotfix flatbacks; instead, opt for non-Hotfix crystals and affix them with a strong adhesive like epoxy resin or polyurethane glue.

Flatback Crystal Crafting Ideas

With a selection of Swarovski flatback crystals to hand you can embellish all kinds of objects, including:

  • Hardback notebooks and diaries
  • Picture frames
  • Photo albums
  • Christmas decorations
  • Greeting cards
  • Vases and jewellery dishes
  • Wine glasses
  • Clothes and shoes

Before you start embellishing, make sure you have the right kind of adhesive for the material (if you’re not using Hotfix rhinestones), a clean working surface with plenty of light, and a clear idea in mind of what you want to create. It’s also helpful to have a pair of tweezers and a jewel setter for picking up the crystals and placing them on the surface.

Crystal Jewellery

As we’ve seen, embellishing with flatback crystals is one of the easiest ways to jazz up a boring piece of bric-a-brac or old clothing. But if you’re feeling more adventurous, why not branch out and try making your own jewellery?

We stock a wide range of Swarovski crystal beads, which are perfect for making necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Take a look at our threads, wires and metal findings, and you’ll find everything you need to craft some stunning pieces of jewellery.

Don’t forget that at Bluestreak we stock all our beads and crystals in wholesale as well as small pack sizes. You never know, with such fantastic materials to work with, that craft stall could really take off…
